Frizzle chicken farming is popular mainly for it’s distinctive characteristics of curled or frizzled plumage. It is truly a unique chicken breed. And it is actually a dual purpose bird which is valued for both meat and eggs production purposes.
Frizzle chicken should have an African origin especially among the Igbo/Ibo tribe in the southeastern part of Nigeria due to it's use by the African traditional religion worshippers or native doctors.
In Igbo land, due to the dialect differences in the Igbo language, so also does the local name of Frizzle chicken differs but has one meaning.
In Abia, Anambra, Enugu, Imo, and Ebonyi states, its called Abuke,Ayahiri'
Ayahara, Ajilija and Iyaya okuko. It is called these names because of it's ruffled feathers(Nwokeomo).
Iyaya okuko(frizzle chicken) is equally recognized as a distinct breed in these nine European countries and Australia. The European countries which recognize this breed are; United Kingdom, Germany, France, Italy, Belgium, Ireland, Poland, Czech Republic and Slovakia.
Iyaya okuko is truly a unique chicken breed. Unlike most other chickens, the plumage of Iyaya chicken is curved outward and forward, giving it the appearance of having walked through a wind storm backwards. Though the origin of Iyaya is asummed to be unknown.
Characteristics of Abuke okuko
• It is heavy breed of chicken weighing 3.2-3.6 kg(Rooster) and 2.25-2.7 kg(Hen) at maturity.
• It is avery hardy poultry breed which grows quickly.
• It is a gentle breed and the hens are good layers. Hens lay medium sized tinted or white colored eggs, and they get broody frequently.
• They are dual purpose breed and suitable for both meat and eggs production.
• They are great foragers and perfectly well suited to free range conditions or outdoor pens. They can also be confined very well.
• The Ajilija chicks when they are hatched appear to be normally feathered. But their wing feathers start to grow and turn outwards soon.
• Plumage color varies from red,black,white,spotted or the combination of all.
Uses of Ayahiri in Igbo land
• For sacrifice to the deities of the land during festivities such as:
√ Iriji festivals
√ Masquerade initiations.
• For meat
• For beautification (exhibition)
• Source of income.

This breed of chicken is from Igbo/lbo land in Nigeria, west Africa though Research is still ongoing to unravel the true origin.
